Replacement dwelling, West Cornwall
Designed to replace an existing small cottage which was structurally unsound and not worthy or retention, the new building offers a sustainable, low carbon living space on a tight budget on the edge of the West Cornwall World Heritage Site.
Designed with 3 bedrooms, open plan living and two mezzanine spaces, the layout affords south facing views of the garden and passive solar gains. Larger roof overhangs to the south east and west ensure less sun penetration during the summer months while thick walls, roof and floor insulated with reclaimed sheep’s wool and triple glazing throughout ensures, high insulation levels, impressive decrement delay and an organic approach giving the building a carbon credit at the outset. Solar Thermal panels provide hot water and a small wood burning stove give an alternative eat source during winter months. Main heating when needed is provided through underfloor heating and a small heat pump.

The structure involves a glulam post and beam frame with engineered timber joists. The floor is fully suspended and cantilevers to form a broad terrace to the living area and two of the bedrooms.
