The Sanctuary, Golant
Commissioned by a local business running kayak trips on the River Fowey, this single storey building serves as an extension of the business providing catered and self catering accommodation, meeting rooms and workshops. Set in a nature reserve developed by the clients, the building is also located in an area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and replaces an open pole barn which presented a challenges in planning terms. The design and construction respond to the brief being largely composed or organic materials, locally sourced. Being entirely off grid it is designed to reduce energy requirements in the first instance. To achieve a fully functioning commercial building off grid the building has Solar thermal panels for hot water, Solar PV for electrical energy with accompanying Lithium battery storage, bore hole water supply and a biomass Gasification log boiler for winter heating of space and hot water. (Hardly ever used) The PV energy is used to charge an electric car and surplus also runs immersion to provide supplement to space heating and hot water.
The single storey design is simple based on a post and beam structure with space frames in the walls and engineered joists in the roof and suspended floor. Super insulation is achieved with reclaimed sheeps wool and triple glazing throughout. The buildings glazing largely faces west with unimpeded panoramic views of the River Fowey. The roof is biodiverse with solar PV and Solar thermal panels providing both heating and hot water.
Restricted access dictated that no materials left site and most materials delivered to the site were on smaller vehicles. This reduced waste streams and increased economy.
It represents one of the most impressive true zero carbon buildings in the southwest and remains a credit to its self- build owners who had the vision to develop this uncompromising building for the future.
