Wadebridge School Education Centre
Commissioned by the governors of Wadebridge School following the success of Lanlivery’s original new classroom, the building provided the first designated library and purpose-built design technology department in a Cornish primary school coupled with purpose-built adult education facilities for the wider community under one roof.
The building provides naturally lit, sustainable construction using timber frame, recycled newsprint insulation and local materials on two floors. The ground floor is accessed via a glass link from the school whilst the upper floor is served by an elevated walkway linking the main car park and providing level access. The 240m2 facility embodies the concept of inclusivity at many levels and was built on a budget of £310,000. It was described by County Council officers as a ‘pipe dream’ in its early conceptual stages but through the ingenuity of the design and the main contractor Shaun Bunney coupled with the tenacity of the staff and governors, children and adults alike, have enjoyed the benefits of this ‘pipe dream’ since opening in early 2006.
